Donor-Advised Funds (DAF)

Donor-advised funds are the most popular way to contribute to Colorado Headwaters Land Trust. DAFs allow you to combine the most favorable tax benefits with the flexibility to easily support CHLT and other nonprofits through cash, appreciated securities, and other assets. DAFs allow you to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax deducation, and then recommend grants from your DAF account over time to the nonprofits you wish to support.

Employer Match

Many companies offer programs that will match your charitable gift, and in some cases double or triple your gift amount. Check with your employer to see if they have a gift match program for nonprofits. Some companies even match gifts for retirees, members of the board and spouses.

Gifts Of Stock

By giving appreciated stocks, bonds and mutual fund shares; you can avoid capital gains taxes and receive an income tax deduction.

Legacy/Bequest in Will

A gift in your will or trust is one of the easiest ways to continue protecting the land we love: all it takes is a few sentences in your will!

With a gift in your will or trust, you retain control of the assets making up your gift, you can change your gift at any time and for any reason, you can direct your gift to be used for a specific purpose within the organization, and you have no upper limit on the estate tax deduction for your charitable gift in your will for Colorado Headwaters Land Trust.

There are multiple ways to leave a gift in your will, including a general bequest, a residuary bequest, a specific bequest, and a contingent bequest; please consult a tax or financial professional to learn more.

Life Insurance

Life insurance may be an affordable way to leave a gift to Colorado Headwaters Land Trust while you receive tax savings benefits during your lifetime. With a life insurance gift, the tax savings can be immediately realized, and the donation could reduce the final taxes of your estate.

Retirement Plan Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

Distributions from a traditional individual retirement account (IRA) may be the perfect opportunity for charitable giving once you no longer need those assets. Individuals aged 70 ½ are required to begin taking distributions from their retirement accounts; when taken from an IRA those distributions will be counted and taxed as ordinary income, sometimes putting those individuals in a higher tax bracket. A QCD from a traditional IRA (this does not apply to a SEP IRA or a SIMPLE IRA, and different rules apply to a Roth IRA) allows a qualified individual to donate up to $100,000 from their IRA to a 501(c)(3) organization, such as CHLT, without the funds being counted toward current income. As a charitable organization, CHLT is exempt from paying the taxes that might otherwise be owed. However, as the QCD is not taxed, the distribution is not eligible for a charitable tax deduction.

Vehicles

Colorado Headwaters Land Trust accepts all forms of support when it comes to driving our mission, even the stranger things! From SUVs and RVs to ice-resurfacers and jet skis, we work with CARS to accept all types of vehicles as gifts to fund our mission of protecting open space.

The process is easy, and CARS provides free pick-up whether the vehicle running or not. To donate a vehicle, it must have a clear title, be in one piece and towable, and be tow-truck accessible. To learn more or to start your vehicle donation, call (855) 500-7433 or email donorsupport@ careasy.org.
